Introduction to Ashtakoot Matching

Ashtakoot Milan, also known as Ashtakoot matching or Gun Milan, is the traditional Vedic astrology method for determining compatibility between two individuals for marriage. The term "Ashtakoot" comes from Sanskrit where "Ashta" means eight and "Koota" means categories or points.

The 8 Kootas (Factors)

1. Varna (1 Point)

Varna represents spiritual compatibility and the ego levels of partners. The four Varnas are:

  • Brahmin (highest spiritual development)
  • Kshatriya (warrior class)
  • Vaishya (merchant class)
  • Shudra (service class)

  • For compatibility, the groom's Varna should be equal to or higher than the bride's.

    2. Vashya (2 Points)

Vashya indicates the power equation and mutual attraction between partners. It determines who will have more influence in the relationship. The categories include:

  • Manava (Human)
  • Vanachara (Wild animals)
  • Chatushpada (Four-legged)
  • Jalchar (Aquatic)
  • Keeta (Insects)

  • 3. Tara (3 Points)

Tara or Dina Koota relates to the birth stars (Nakshatras) of both partners. It indicates the health, well-being, and destiny of the couple. A favorable Tara ensures good fortune and longevity of the relationship.

    4. Yoni (4 Points)

Yoni represents physical and sexual compatibility. Each Nakshatra is associated with an animal symbol:

  • Horse, Elephant, Sheep, Snake, Dog, Cat, Rat, Cow, Buffalo, Tiger, Deer, Monkey, Mongoose, Lion

  • Partners with friendly animal yonis have better physical compatibility.

    5. Graha Maitri (5 Points)

Also called Rasyadhipati, this factor assesses mental compatibility and friendship between the Moon signs of both partners. It determines:

  • Intellectual compatibility
  • Mutual understanding
  • Friendship levels

  • 6. Gana (6 Points)

Gana represents temperament and nature. The three Ganas are:

    - Deva (Divine): Gentle, cultured, humble

    - Manushya (Human): Balanced, practical

    - Rakshasa (Demon): Aggressive, dominating

Best matches occur within the same Gana or compatible combinations.

    7. Bhakoot (7 Points)

Bhakoot analyzes the Moon sign positions and indicates:

  • Financial prosperity
  • Family welfare
  • Longevity of the relationship

  • Certain combinations are considered inauspicious and called "Bhakoot Dosha."

    8. Nadi (8 Points)

Nadi is the most important factor with maximum points. It relates to:

  • Health compatibility
  • Genetic factors
  • Progeny prospects

  • The three Nadis are Aadi (beginning), Madhya (middle), and Antya (end). Same Nadi is considered inauspicious.

    Scoring System

    - Maximum Points: 36

    - Minimum Required: 18 (50%)

    - Good Match: 25-32 points (70-90%)

    - Excellent Match: 32+ points (90%+)

    Conclusion

While Ashtakoot matching provides valuable insights, remember that no astrological system can guarantee a successful marriage. Mutual respect, communication, and commitment are equally important for a lasting relationship.
